ANGELO MARIA RICCI E LE SERIE A FUMETTI ITALIANE

In un’ottica di rigore professionale, la carriera di Angelo Maria Ricci offre un osservatorio privilegiato sul fumetto classico italiano.

Nato nel 1946 a Rieti, Ricci studia a Terni e a 23 anni si trasferisce a Milano, dove dal 1971 diviene un illustratore professionista. Non tarda però a trovare spazio nel mondo del fumetto, addentrandosi in generi diversi. In seguito, approda alla prestigiosa casa editrice Bonelli, per la quale lavora a serie popolarissime come Mister No e, per oltre un decennio, alla produzione di Martin Mystère. Nel frattempo, dalla sua matita prendono corpo le storie di Diabolik, una delle figure simbolo del fumetto nazionale. È curioso notare come queste stesse icone siano divenute riferimenti iconografici a Grottammare, dove Ricci vive dal 2000.

Di rilievo sono anche i fumetti pubblicati sui periodici per ragazzi delle edizioni Universo e Rizzoli: Roy Rogers Investigatore, Il giovane Indiana Jones, che poi ritorna nel tempo (1978–79), Red Skye, in cui lo stile di Ricci, caratterizzato dalla pulizia delle immagini e dal segno robusto e sicuro dei contorni, si è già pienamente definito. La sua tecnica consolidata, invece, affonda nell’immediata esperienza milanese: qui si può apprezzare non in opere a fumetti, ma in una serie di illustrazioni a tema biblico realizzate nel 1993 per Fabbri Editori.

Un discorso a parte meritano due lavori svolti su commissione locale: “La sacra di Grottammare a fumetti”, creata nel 2007 per commemorare un episodio del XII secolo tuttora al centro di una sentita festa cittadina, e “Un’avventura a Grottammare”, tavola che rievoca un concerto tenuto da Lucio Battisti al Kursaal nel 1970.

ANGELO MARIA RICCI AND THE ITALIAN COMIC SERIES

This room offers an overview of traditional Italian comics focusing the attention on Angelo Maria Ricci’s career.

Ricci was born in 1946 in Rieti and studied in Terni and at the age of 23 moved to Milan, where he became a professional illustrator in 1971. Soon after, he entered the world of comics and crossed several of its genres, before being hired by the prestigious Bonelli publishing house. For this publisher, he worked on very famous series such as Mister No and, for over a decade, Martin Mystère. In the meanwhile, he gives life to the stories of Diabolik, one of the very icons of Italian comics. Curiously, he has filled these characters with several common graphic references to Grottammare, where he has been living since 2000.

Moreover, he published his comics in periodicals for kids, issued by major publishers such as Universo and Rizzoli: Roy Rogers Investigatore (Roy Rogers Investigator), Il giovane Indiana Jones (The young Indiana Jones), and the oldest Redskye (1978–79), in which Ricci’s drawing style, characterised by clean images and thick contour lines, is already clearly established. His consolidated technique, instead, plunges its roots in the milanese experience: it can be appreciated in a Bible-themed series of illustration, created for Fabbri Editori in 1993.

Two works commissioned by the local administration of Grottammare deserve a separate discussion. These are La sacra di Grottammare a fumetti (Grottammare’s historical pageant in comics), made in 2007 to recall an event dating back to the 12th century that is still commemorated to this day, and Un’avventura a Grottammare (An adventure in Grottammare), which recalls the celebration of a concert held in 1970 by singer Lucio Battisti at the Kursaal.

GENIUS LOCI

In questa sezione sono presenti xilografie di Adolfo De Carolis, litografie e disegni di Pericle Fazzini e Andrea Pazienza, incisioni di Tullio Pericoli e ritratti futuristi di Cleto Capponi. Sono cinque autori, molto diversi fra loro per orientamento individuale e per appartenenza scolastica, che si differenziano in modo sostanziale anche nel riconoscersi come lettori e fruitori di spazi urbani e di contesti abitativi. Si tratta di artisti che, per la loro produzione, si sono ispirati a luoghi specifici e si sono concentrati nella generazione di linguaggi comuni. Nelle opere di ognuno si colgono le impressioni più significative dei luoghi di origine, attraverso messaggi intimi e collaterali, permanenti e transitori; oltre al lato sentimentale e di memoria collettiva, le loro opere riflettono l’influenza che il luogo genera nella loro forma mentis e nel modo di concepire il mondo.

GENIUS LOCI (SPIRIT OF THE PLACE)

This section includes woodcuts by Adolfo De Carolis, lithographs and drawings by Pericle Fazzini and Andrea Pazienza, engravings by Tullio Pericoli, and Futurist portraits by Cleto Capponi. These five artists, each of them very different in their individual orientation and scholastic affiliations, also differ in their recognition as readers and users of urban spaces and residential contexts. For their works, these artists drew inspiration from specific places and focused on generating shared languages. Their pieces capture the most significant impressions of the places of origin, through intimate and collateral, permanent and transitory messages. Beyond the sentimental and collective memory aspects, their creation reflects the influence that the place has on their mindset and on the way of conceiving the world.

MUSEO DELL’ILLUSTRAZIONE CONTEMPORANEA

All’interno del Palazzo Kursaal trova spazio il MIC (Museo dell’Illustrazione Contemporanea). Originariamente dedicato esclusivamente all’illustrazione comica, oggi il museo conserva ed espone una ricca collezione di tavole originali, manifesti e illustrazioni create dai più importanti disegnatori e artisti italiani. Al museo sono inoltre dedicate mostre temporanee, che arricchiscono ulteriormente la sua proposta culturale.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ILLUSTRATION

The Museum of Contemporary Illustration (the so-called “MIC”) is housed within “Palazzo Kursaal”. Originally devoted exclusively to comic illustration, the museum now preserves and showcases a rich collection of original drawings, posters, and illustrations created by some of Italy’s most prominent artists and illustrators. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, further enriching its cultural offering.

MUSEO SISTINO DI ARTE SACRA

Inaugurato nel 2002, questo museo appartenente alla rete dei Musei Sistini del Piceno è ospitato nella chiesa parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista, situata nel cuore del borgo antico.

L’edificio, che sorge sul sito di una chiesa preesistente, fu ricostruito dall’architetto ticinese Pietro Maggi alla fine del 700, al quale furono affidati anche la costruzione dell’attiguo Teatro dell’Arancio e il riassetto della piazza antistante la chiesa.

La chiesa venne restaurata nel secondo decennio del XX secolo e interamente decorata dal pittore sambenedettese Giuseppe Pauri secondo un progetto pittorico unitario. L’artista ha tracciato in due tondi della volta il suo nome e la data dell’intervento.

Il programma iconografico della chiesa si svolge su tele riportate al soffitto: inizia al di sopra dell’altare maggiore con un dipinto raffigurante San Giovanni nel deserto e, ai lati, i due patroni di Grottammare, San Patrizio, a destra, e San Paterniano, a sinistra, continua poi nella volta della navata con la Glorificazione di San Giovanni Battista e il Compianto di Cristo.

Accanto alle finestre si trovavano quattro tele che raffiguravano gli evangelisti, oggi rimosse. Le scene sono collegate da elementi decorativi che presentano evidenti richiami al decorativismo liberty.

Nel presbiterio si conserva una Madonna del Carmelo attribuita a Ubaldo Ricci (secolo XVIII) e i pannelli superstiti di un polittico dovuto a Vittore Crivelli (secolo XV), oltre che un ritratto di Sisto V e uno splendido banco da chiesa in legno dipinto, opera marchigiana del Settecento.

Si ammirano, inoltre, una pala d’altare di Vincenzo Pagani che rappresenta una Sacra Conversazione (c. 1530-1535), una piccola tavoletta del Pauri raffigurante la Processione del Cristo morto a Grottammare, una Educazione della Vergine di Filippo Ricci (sec. XVIII) e un Busto di Santa Lucia riferito all’ambito dello scultore berniniano Denis Plouvier. Nella controfacciata è situato il meraviglioso organo, decorato da esuberanti sculture lignee scolpite nel 1600. Unico per bellezza e storia, infine, è il calice, collocato nel fondo della navata e racchiuso in una teca, dono lasciato in eredità dal papa che Sisto V alla sua città di origine

SISTINE MUSEUM OF SACRED ART

This museum was inaugurated in 2002 and it is part of the Sistine Museums network of Piceno, is housed in the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, located in the heart of the old town.

The building, which stands on the site of a pre-existing church, was rebuilt by the local architect Pietro Maggi in the late 18th century. He was also responsible for the construction of the adjacent Teatro dell'Arancio and for the upgrading of the square in front of the church.

The church was restored in the second decade of the 20th century and was entirely decorated by the painter Giuseppe Pauri, an artist from San Benedetto, according to a unified pictorial project. The artist inscribed his name and the date of the work on two roundels of the vault.

The iconographic program of the church develops on canvases mounted on the ceiling: the first painting, above the high altar, depicts Saint John in the Desert and, on either side, the two patron saints of Grottammare: Saint Patrick, on the right, and Saint Paterniano, on the left. The paintings continue in the nave vault with the Glorification of Saint John the Baptist and the Lamentation of Christ.

Next to the windows there were four canvases depicting the evangelists, now removed. All the scenes of the iconographic program are connected by decorative elements that clearly recall the Art Nouveau decoration.

The presbytery houses the Madonna del Carmelo attributed to Ubaldo Ricci (18th century) and the surviving panels of a polyptych by Vittore Crivelli (15th century), as well as a portrait of Sixtus V and a splendid painted wooden pew, a work from the 18th century.

Moreover, you can admire an altarpiece by Vincenzo Pagani depicting a Sacred Conversation (c. 1530-1535), a small panel by Pauri depicting the Procession of the Dead Christ in Grottammare, an Education of the Virgin by Filippo Ricci (18th century), and a Bust of Saint Lucy attributed to Denis Plouvier, a circle of Bernini's sculptor. The counterfaçade houses the marvelous organ, decorated with exuberant wooden sculptures carved in the 17th century. Finally, the chalice, located at the end of the nave and enclosed in a glass case, is unique in its beauty and history. It was a gift bequeathed by Pope Sixtus V to his hometown.

Teatro dell’Arancio e Orologio Storico

Costruito nell'ultimo decennio del XVIII secolo dall'architetto Pietro Maggi, il Teatro dell’Arancio è uno dei 73 teatri storici delle Marche, testimonianza di una regione in cui l’arte teatrale ha avuto una diffusione capillare. L’orologio storico, sito nel Teatro, è un autentico gioiello meccanico costruito nel 1844 da Pietro Mei e rappresenta un’importante testimonianza del modo in cui il tempo veniva misurato e regolato nelle comunità del passato.

Built in the final decade of the 18th century by architect Pietro Maggi, the "Teatro dell’Arancio” is one of the 73 historic theatres in the Marche region, a testament to a land where theatrical art spread with remarkable breadth. The historic clock housed within the Theatre is a true mechanical gem, crafted in 1844 by Pietro Mei. It stands as an important witness to how time was once measured and regulated within the communities of the past.
